Chinese Man with “Serpent”
Chinese Man with “Serpent”
Lavish parties attended by members of Rococo court society were always accompanied by the commanding bass tone of the serpent. There are also two boys among Franz Anton Bustelli’s group of Chinese figures encouraging people to dance with their golden snake-shaped horns. With an easy vivacity, this musician, clad in a striped shirt and wide trousers, plays the 24-carat gold-plated instrument, while seemingly dancing at the same time.
